Luke Ellis wakes up at The Institute, a facility that abducts teenagers with psychic powers. Ms. Sigsby, the place's charismatic director, claims they're saving the world. Meanwhile, Tim Jamieson hides from his haunted past as a small-town night knocker.

Luke bonds with the other Front Half residents, begins plotting his escape. Meanwhile, Ms. Sigsby manages the fallout from a security breach. In town, Tim begins to look into The Institute, only to find himself caught up in a high-stakes standoff.

In town, Tim meets Kate and talks more with Annie. As Tim begins to learn more about the Institute, at the Institute Luke and Nicky plan their escape now that they have Avery to help them. Sigsby finds herself at odds with Stackhouse, while Hendricks continues his testing.

Three new arrivals show up at the Institute and one is prone to violent outbursts. Sigsby suspects Hendricks is working behind her back with Stackhouse to move Luke along the PC track. Meanwhile, Tim tells Wendy why he thinks Annie's death was no suicide.

Sigsby confronts Luke with the truth about his parents, determining that he's a TP. Meanwhile, Nick "graduates" and is taken to Back Half. where he learns more about what goes on there and what the Institute is doing with the psychic teens.

Luke escapes the Institute with Maureen's help, and finally meets Tim. Now, Tim has to convince Luke he's sincere. Meanwhile, Stackhouse and Sigsby learn about Luke's escape, and Stackhouse calls on reinforcements to bring in the wayward boy.

Tim and Luke lose one of their allies when another mole takes desperate action. Then the pair turns to Wendy for help, but Sigsby and her clean-up team arrive in town to pick up Luke and eliminate Tim once and for all. Tim gets the upper hand, and Sigsby fully explains what the Institute has been doing.

Luke returns to the Institute after having a talk with Sigsby. Tim and Wendy help him, Stackhouse and a guard prepare a final solution involving chlorine gas, while Avery leads the other Institute residents around the world in striking back.
